Seminar on Cyber and Physical Security of Critical Infrastructure

Herff College of Engineering and the Center for Information Assurance

University of Memphis, Memphis, TN 38152

Based on federal laws, the Department of Homeland Security describes Critical Infrastructure (CI) as systems and assets including energy and water resources, ground and air transportation networks, banking and financial institutions whose destruction can cause a catastrophic impact on the nation’s economy, security and public health.  Over the past decade, safety and security of the nation’s CI have become of utmost importance. Advancement in Internet technology has enabled command, control, feedback and even physical security communication associated with CI facilities to be transmitted through dedicated channels or simply through the Internet. These developments have created an unexpected destructive window for all the elements of nation’s infrastructure and established a strong link between cyber and physical aspects of Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP).  For example, many cyber vulnerabilities have been identified by cyber security assessments of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. This seminar intends to promote the idea of combined cyber-physical strategies CIP. The seminar will bring together scientists, engineers and administrators from various agencies related to CI along with experts in the area of cyber and physical security from industry and academia. Topics of presented and discussed will cover modeling and simulation, sensor technology and computational intelligence for co-design cyber physical CIP tools.
